About this booklet

This booklet is presented as course material from Instituto Guerrera, the language school featured in the False Friends series.

It was written by Ramón Muñoz Ortega, one of the school’s teachers, with illustrations by Andrés Peña Ocampo. On the surface, it’s a short, practical introduction to the Spanish subjunctive — the part of the language used for doubts, feelings, opinions, and things that aren’t quite certain.

The booklet follows the look and feel of real classroom handouts used in language schools in Spain, with short explanations, example sentences, simple exercises, and visual prompts. Most of the content is in Spanish, with just enough English to help you follow along. You don’t need to have studied Spanish before, even though it helps — this isn’t a proper grammar course, and it doesn’t try to be one.

For fans of False Friends, this is an extra piece of the story world: something students at Instituto Guerrera are given in class. As you read, you may notice that a few things feel slightly off — the kind of details that only stand out once you start paying attention.

It’s meant to be dipped into, not studied.
Have a look. Write something down. See what you notice. And, above all — have fun.
