Standalone on the surface, connected underneath

Circle works well as a standalone, which I appreciated, even though it initially feels separate from Layers. The South African setting came as a surprise and added a strong sense of place. After reading more about A.G.R. Goff’s background in the UK and South Africa, that choice made a lot of sense. Subtle thematic echoes suggest the books are more connected than they first appear, and it left me curious to see how those threads come together in the third instalment.

    Strong Concept, Uneven Execution

Circle has a strong central idea and some genuinely tense moments, but it didn’t fully come together for me. The psychological pressure is effective at times, yet parts of the story feel repetitive and a little drawn out. I liked the atmosphere and what the book was aiming for, but I struggled to stay fully engaged all the way through. An interesting read with flashes of strength, just not as satisfying as it could have been.
