A good story is not only entertaining but it also sparks the reader's emotions. It doesn't matter if he/she likes the story, if it makes him/her laugh, angry or if he/she simply loves it. We all remember stories better if we can connect them with emotions in some way. But how do you create emotions when writing a novel? Well, I don't think there is a "one-fits-all" solution. But reading a lot of books and being aware of what they do to you is a good start. Maybe even try to re-write a story that made you cry or laugh.
